 Soothe and Calm Your Baby

These are some tips to help soothe and calm your baby. They actually do wonders for you as well!

Skin to skin contact: You and your baby can cuddle bare skin to bare skin, especially on your chest. Your baby will find this very comforting. They were very comfortable in your womb. This will make them feel at home.

Put your baby to the breast: Whether you are breastfeeding at the moment or not. The suckle reflex is very strong and comforting to a baby.

Massage your baby: Skin to skin is important. Rub your baby down with your hands and fingers. This works better on a baby that is relatively calm already.

Smells: Your baby will not like foreign smells. Deodorants are foreign smells. So are air fresheners. Your natural scent is best for your baby. Forget about using scented laundry detergent, even on your clothes.

Babies like noise. Running water, you cooing, even vacuum cleaners! Play a little music. You should already be talking to your baby. Your baby has heard you talking for months!

Breastmilk should remain constant. In taste, that is. Eat the same foods and diet you had since giving birth. Some foods may make the milk taste different causing a little fussiness. Check with a lactation consultant.

Daylight exposure is a must. Go for a walk. Give your baby some indirect sunlight. Not too bright. Dim, subdued light indoors is best as well.

Keep up your spirits! Make your baby know that you are happy. Smile, laugh.

Don’t overstimulate. Keep the TV and stereo down. Make sure your baby has a quiet, low light place to sleep and nap.
