 SIDS clue found by researchers

New findings of research on SIDS are appearing in Journal of the American Medical Association.

SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome) kills up to 2,300 infants each year who are not yet one year old.

The researchers studied the brains of some of these infants and found lower levels of the chemical serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical associated with heart, breathing, and sleep.

The researchers hope these findings will lead to more break throughs in fighting and preventing SIDS.

The number one thing you can do to help prevent SIDS is to always have your baby sleep on their back. Never face down. Face down babies have more of a chance to breath back in exhaled carbon dioxide.

Also, keep baby’s face away from blankets, pillows, and other loose clothing that can suffocate.

A room that is too warm has also been shown to increase SIDS risk.
