July 14th, 2009 Make your home safe for baby and toddler
Making your home safe is one of the most important things you can do as a new mom. There are the obvious things, like covering electrical plates, remove or change stove controls, and keeping cabinets and cupboards child proof. But you should think about other things as well.
Watch to temperature of your hot water. Better to turn your hot water down than to risk scalding your baby or toddler.
Toddlers have a tendency to climb and jump. You need to avoid kids being able to climb and fall.
Keep you windows child proof. Even a small fall out a window can be fatal.
Fire deaths in toddlers and babies is higher than older kids and adults. This is because the cannot save themselves. You need to have a plan for fire escape and working smoke detectors.
Are you making changes to your house? Be warned if you have an old house that you may disturb lead based paint and asbestos. Better to get your house checked by a licensed contractor or professional before doing any renovating.
Do you spray for bugs? The fumes alone are toxic. But one of the biggest worries is the residue it can leave on floors and objects. Spraying insecticide can be harmful. Your baby and toddler crawls along the ground. You do not want to make the floor toxic. It is better to seal your windows and doors, keep food off the floor and counters, and use solid bug killers that you can hide in cabinets.
