You may think washing diapers is more work, but you will have less trash to dispose of, and you can wash them all at the same time. No sorting! (It is illegal to put solid human waste in the regular trash) Get a diaper pail for used diapers or an airtight plastic bag. Be sure and put solid waste in the toilet. It should not be washed. You can choose when to wash a load. Just have enough to last for your interval. You can either dry in dryer or clothesline. Sun drying can help to disinfect. You don't even have to fold them! You can buy laundry detergent specifically for diapers, but use natural non-perfumed detergent. If you breastfeed, however, the rules change. Breastfed babies have less solid waste and generally you just have to wipe a little bit off with toilet paper and flush! Breastfed baby's poop is normally more watery! Very easy to wash! Good idea to use the extra rinse cycle as well. Add water softener to wash cycle. Do not use dryer sheets.
You need to indeed keep them in an airtight container or your house will smell. If your washing machine is in the garage, you may get away with leaving them out. But bugs, mice, and other things will invade, so keep this in mind. A diaper pail in the changing room works best. You can open and close it with your foot. There are commercial diaper services. They normally pick up and deliver once a week. These services will provide the containers and do all the work. But they can be expensive.
