You will get all kinds of conflicting information from friends, relatives, and sadly, doctors and nurses. If you are close to being normal, healthy, average women of childbearing age, breastfeeding is possible and should be encouraged. Many people have just plain bad information on breastfeeding. Consult the experts. I consider myself an expert. I am a board certified lactation consultant. Just because someone has MD after their name does not make them an expert on all health matters. Some just don't know. Some think they know. However, having said that, you should always follow your doctor's advice. But if they are giving you conflicting information, get other opinions. Even if you do not get the best and most complete prenatal care, you still can and should breastfeed! And that leads to the next step. In fact, it might actually be the most important step. Read the next paragraph closely! For even better effect, read it out loud! CHOOSE AN OB DOCTOR AND PEDIATRICIAN THAT FULLY AND COMPLETELY SUPPORT BREASTFEEDING! If you don't choose wisely, you may be conned, and yes the word is conned, into not breastfeeding. As I stated before, there is NO reason to steer any woman of childbearing age who is moderately healthy into not giving her baby breast-milk. Anyone who states that formula is just as good as breast-milk or that there is no difference is flat out wrong, Period. And I will go even further. Many "unhealthy" and "abnormal" women can and do breastfeed as well as anyone else! I fully realize there are mothers who just will not breastfeed for whatever reason. If after given all the reasons to breastfeed a mother chooses the bottle, so be it. Go and feed in peace. But the most important step in successful breastfeeding is to surround yourself with support people, especially medical professionals, who fully support and are knowledgeable on breastfeeding. And if you are reading this far, you are committed, right? But I have doctors already! I can only use the doctors I am assigned! No problem! Most hospitals have lactation services. Many have breastfeeding classes. Most people live near more than one hospital. Check them all out! There are many support groups and lactation services around the country. Most are free or very cheap! If you found this website, I know you can use the web to find more. Chapter 7 is a small list of internet resources, as well as a toll-free number. It should not matter who your doctor is. If you emphatically state to him or her that you ARE going to breastfeed, they SHOULD support you! You may need to be firm. Always remember other people will promote the easy way, not necessarily the best way. And if you think breastfeeding will be hard, just wait until you start buying, mixing, heating formula at two in the morning! You are now aware of the two biggest things to lay the foundation of successful breastfeeding: Human females who have babies naturally produce milk! Surround yourself with breastfeeding experts and supporters! Click for chapter 3 Copyright 2007 by Martha Loredo. All rights reserved.
